An Ilkeston pensioner who collapsed on his doorstep following an ‘altercation’ has died in hospital.
The man named locally as Derek was well known by passers-by. He regularly stood at this front door on Station Road and shared conversation with people heading to and from the town centre.
Officers were called to his house yesterday following reports that he had been involved in a dispute with another man.
The 86-year-old collapsed and was taken to hospital but died in the early hours of this morning.
Police believe people will have walked past the house after the incident and while the man was being aided by passers-by. They have asked for anyone with information to contact them.
His death is being treated as unexplained so far and an investigation has been launched.
Meanwhile, workers at a neighbouring pawn shop paid tribute to the man who they described as pleasant and active for his age.
People interviewed on TV news coverage expressed shock and dismay that an elderly man should die in such circumstances.
