A teenager who is making waves at a rapidly growing digital agency is celebrating being named apprentice of the year.

Joshua Smith, 18, a digital marketing apprentice at Fifteen, won the level three apprentice of the year at Learning Unlimited, part of Chesterfield College.
Joshua, from Watnall, joined Ilkeston based Fifteen in June 2016 and works as a project manager, teaching clients how to use their website.

He said: “I was surprised when I found out I had won. I wasn’t expecting it and it definitely made my weekend better.

“I had already heard of Fifteen and knew it was a great company to work for. I got an interview and found out the day after that I had got the job.
“I left college the month before and knew that I wanted to work in the business side of web design, managing projects rather than just designing. This role seemed perfectly moulded. “

Josh had originally wanted to go to sixth form at Kimberley School but just missed out on the grades. He went to an apprenticeship fair to see what he could do next and found out about New College Nottingham. He enrolled and studied graphic design for two years.
He said: “I have always been better in the workplace than in education. It’s brilliant learning something new, not just about the role but about myself and what I can do. Every week is different.”

When his apprenticeship ends in December Joshua wants to stay with Fifteen because he has learned so much. “It’ a great team here’, he said, ‘I’m glad they gave me the opportunity. Everyone here is brilliant at what they do.

“I would encourage others to take on apprenticeships, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I loved college but after two years it wasn’t really beneficial for me.”
Fifteen currently has three apprentices and is looking for more. Joshua attended a ceremony at Pride Park on March 9 where there were 30 shortlisted apprentices across 11 categories.

Managing Director of Fifteen, Ollie Piddubriwnyj, said: “He’s very eager. When everyone else is leaving university with £30,000 of debt he’ll have all this experience under his belt.”
