It’s tree-mendous! Erewash Borough Council’s popular Free Tree event is back but with a slight change for 2016 . . . Erewash residents will this time be able to pick up a free bush apple tree for their gardens in the annual town centre giveaway.
The council’s flagship Pride in Erewash campaign is behind the annual bonanza, which sees stalls set up in both Ilkeston and Long Eaton – with residents of the borough able to claim one free bush apple tree per household.
This year’s giveaway dates for the diary are:
• Long Eaton – High Street on Wednesday 30 November, from 10am
• Ilkeston – Market Place on Thursday 1 December, from 10am
150 bush apple trees will be available at each of the Free Tree Giveaways Events and they will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis to residents of Erewash only. The varieties will include Cox, Red Falstaff and James Grieve.
Anyone interested can simply turn up on the day and claim their free apple tree.
Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, says:
“Apple trees are the most popular fruit trees grown and also one of the easiest. Thanks to dwarf rootstocks there is an apple tree for every size of garden, even containers, and once established are very low maintenance. Apples are also one of the healthiest fruits, so go along to our stalls early to be sure of getting your favourite to plant.”
The council’s Volunteer Tree Wardens will be at both town centre events to help with information and to promote trees.
