More than 200 people took part in a charity fun run organised by Saint John Houghton Catholic Voluntary Academy.
A 3k and 5k event were held to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to enrich the lives of children and young people with life-threatening conditions.
Entrants were asked to raise sponsorship for the charity after paying an entry fee to help cover the costs of organising the fun run. The final total raised is still being calculated.
A number of sponsors from the local business community also came forward and offered donations or goods.
They included Lobina Transport, Aquinas Foundation, Pam Saint-Gobain, The Office Way, Morley Hayes, Intabag Limited, KRM Building and Landscape Supplies, BJSupplies, Langley Mill Contract Flooring Ltd, UK Tool Hire Ltd, Trailer Service and Repair Ltd, Stuart Lee Sport and Leisure, Boots, The Manor Squash Club, A&S Enterprises Ltd, Hopwells, Derby County FC, Erewash Borough Council, Rayden Engineering Ltd, Spondon Trophies, Decathlon and Creed Catering.
Some of the sponsors donated items which have been used as lots in a blind auction to raise more money for Make-A-Wish.
Karen Morley, finance assistant at Saint John Houghton CVA who organised the event, and the school’s PTA thanked all of the sponsors who made the event possible.
She said: “We had a great turnout and it was a real community event. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our sponsors and we would like to express our gratitude to them.”
Joan McCarthy, head teacher at Saint John Houghton, said it was hoped that the run would become an annual event.
She said: “The whole event took a lot of planning and preparation from the Run team and this paid off on the day. Without the help of this team, the support staff, friends and students who helped on the day, our corporate sponsors and local businesses who loaned equipment for our event, this event would not have been the success it was. We would like to say a huge thankyou to everyone, especially Mrs Morley, for their commitment.”
