A summer-long exhibition at Erewash Museum will showcase the heritage of Bennerley Viaduct – the impressive Grade II listed structure that is an Erewash Valley landmark.
Known as the ‘Iron Giant’, its story and its surroundings will be the key part of the exhibition which opens on 20 May and runs until 30 August.
National sustainable transport charity Sustrans owns the viaduct and has worked in partnership with Erewash Museum to put together the fascinating display that will look at the importance of the1,452ft long structure to the mining industry and its role with the Great Northern Railway.
The viaduct is currently part of a major £2m project by Sustrans to transform it into a cycle and walking path connected to a planned network of routes across the Erewash Valley.
The impressive structure has stood in the Erewash Valley for the past 135 years and visitors to the exhibition will discover its beginnings and fascinating facts about the ‘Iron Giant’, together with the history of the surrounding area.
