Local Erewash MP Maggie Throup has critcised Labour-led Derbyshire County Council, following the news that the authority is to close Hillcrest care home in Kirk Hallam.

The decision to close Hillcrest, in the face of significant public opposition, comes just weeks after the County Council announced plans to cut its funding for Erewash Community Transport from April 2016.

Speaking about recent funding decision by the County Council, Maggie said:
“It is clear from reading the responses to the public consultation that local resident and heath care professionals greatly value the specialist dementia care that Hillcrest provides, and so I was extremely surprised to learn that the County Council is to push ahead with its closure.
“This is just the latest attack by the County Council on elderly people in Erewash, and I for one will not stand for it.
“In light of announcement by the Chancellor in the Autumn Statement that councils are to be allowed to raise addition funds through the Council Tax to pay for social care, I will again be writing to the Cabinet Member responsible for Adult Social Care to ask him to pause this closure in order to reconsider the decision.”
