Ilkeston FC are to take action after a female Hyde United fan was punched at today’s game.

The Ilkeston fan was described as in his twenties. A club spokesman said they would do all they could to identify the person responsible from the description they had, adding that it appeared the young lady had been targeted for no other reason than she was a Hyde supporter. She was treated for a minor injury.

Trouble flared after the match, which was won 3-1 by Ilkeston. The game had been played in an increasingly bad tempered spirit. Hyde had a player sent off for violent conduct and another Hyde player pushed Ilkeston photographer Craig Lamont to the ground, knocking him out. Other players on both sides were cautioned as the referee had to deal with one of the ugliest games for some time.

Police had to be called to the ground when a section of Ilkeston fans stayed on the terrace waiting for news of Craig and for the Hyde players to emerge from the dressing rooms. Eventually they were dispersed.
